What a great question! I often try to explain to those "not on the bus" that a major reason DeadHeads love the band as much as they do is that the songs themselves are so brilliantly unique--and a large reason is the very uderrated lyrics provided by Hunter and Barlow.

For me, there are of course so many, but I often turn to lines from Crazy Fingers, most notably:

"Recall the days that still are to come" (such a simple yet wonderfully paradoxical sentiment; a sweet little Zen poem floated on those gorgeous notes), and I also love
"Gone are the days/we stop to decide/where we should go/we just ride" (try that one next time you're on a long road trip--you'll smile for sure!)

Oh, and I have to mention from Terrapin:

"Inspiration/Move me brightly/Light the song with sense and color/Hold away despair"

I listened to that one a lot in the days just after Jerry's death.

"Seeds that were silent all burst into bloom and decay."

some shows with Eyes of the World

The Wanderer, similar sentiment with whole different tone.

The grass ain't greener, the wine ain't sweeter, either side of the hill.

Since the first time I heard it 30 years ago.
